If You Want To Attain Your Goal. Forget It!
Why is it that regardless of the best of intentions we repeatedly don't achieve the goals we set for ourselves? Could it be we are over ambitious when we set them? Or that we aren't sufficiently ambitious and consequently get bored. Perhaps our goals are too vague so it's not very apparent what we're trying to achieve. Maybe they're not goals we actually desire anyway, but are things we think we "should" desire based on what our family or our boss or society expects of us. If any of these motives apply to the goals we set then it is going to be an mounting battle to achieve them.
But let's assume that the goals we have planned are ones we're keen on and ones we really desire. Why, then is it that, more often than not we still cannot attain them?
Well, there's an inherent difficulty with goal setting and this is it. Goals, are necessarily set for the future. So whenever you concentrate on them you are reminded of something you don't yet have or something you have not yet accomplished. And that can have the effect of lowering your mood and reducing your motivation. You are coming from a position of having your happiness be something in the future. You end up feeling so far away from where you want to be that it lowers your self confidence and can result in being worse than having no goals at all.
So what you have to do is work backwards from your end goal and break it up into smaller pieces, and then break it down again until you have goals that can be completed in a day. Treat it like a map and then set it to one side.
Make your daily goals trackable so that you can note down your successes on a graph or in a journal. For example, if you wanted to shed nine lbs by a specific time. Your daily goals might be to go walking, eat 4 items of fruit, look into low fat recipes and read something that inspires you. You might create a chart to put on your wall so you can cross off your daily goals as you reach them.
If you observe you're not getting close enough to your end goal by your deadline, change or increase your daily targets. You have complete creative control.
This concentration on what you are achieving every day creates momentum and self confidence because you will retire knowing that you've done what you set out to do. You do not have to wait until you reach your end goal and have lost ten lbs. You will already be a success, your self esteem will increase and, if you keep it up, your end goal is certain.
